Youth is not a time of life ;
青春は人生のある時期を言うのではない。


it is a state of　mind ;
心の姿を言うのである。


it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red　lips and supple knees ;
赤い頬や唇、ひざの綺麗さといった問題ではない。


it is a matter of the　will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of　the emotions ;
強い意志、豊かな想像力、あふれる情熱、


it is the freshness of the deep　springs of life.
人生を新鮮に見つめる感性である。


Youth means a temperamental predominance　of courage over timidity of the appetite,　for　adventure over the love of ease.
青春とは、恐れより勇気が勝り、ぬるま湯に居続けることに抵抗し、冒険せずにいられないことを意味する。


This often　exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of　twenty.
そんな青春真っ只中の若者は、20歳の人たちばかりでなく年寄りにも多く存在する。


Nobody grows old merely by a number　of years.
年を重ねるだけで人は老いない。


We grow old by deserting our　ideals.
理想を失ったとき、人は老いる。


Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up　enthusiasm 　wrinkles the soul.
年月は肌にしわを寄せてしまうが、理想をあきらめることは人の心にさえしわを寄せる。


Worry, fear,　self‐distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit　back to dust.
恐れ、不安、自信の喪失は人の熱意を下げ、大切な精神を奪う。


Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every　human being's heart the lure of wonder, 　
たとえ16歳でも、60歳でも、すべての人の心にある好奇心、


the　unfailing child‐like appetite of what's next,　
次に起こることにわくわくする子どものような心、


and the joy of the game of living.
まるでゲームを楽しむような日々。


In the　center of your heart and my heart there is a　wireless station;
人類が誕生したときから、我々の生きる力は脈々と受け継がれている。


so long as it receives messages　of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power　from men and from the Infinite, so long are　you young.
美、希望、元気、脈々と受け継がれてきた人類の勇気と力を現在に受け取る限り、青春なのである。


When the aerials are down,
感性が鈍（にぶ）ったとき、


and your spirit is　covered with snows of cynicism and the ice　of pessimism,　then you are grown old, even at　twenty,
精神が氷のように閉ざされ、20歳だろうと老いる。


but as long as your aerials are up,
感性さえ衰えず、


to　catch the waves of optimism,
どんなときも楽観していられる限り、


there is hope you　may die young at eighty.
年をとっても希望にあふれた人生がある。
