ザ･サン社はコラムで明快に回答します。
「はい、サンタクロースはいます」

"Dear Editor: I am 8 years old.

「友達には、サンタクロースはいないと言う子もいます」
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.

「パパは『サン』に書いてあるなら、本当だよ」と言います。
"Papa says 'If you see it in The Sun it's so.'

「本当のことを教えてください。サンタクロースはいるの？」
"Please tell me the truth: is there a Santa Claus?

「バージニア・オハンロン。
"Virginia O'Hanlon.
「西95丁目115番地。」
"115 West Ninety-fifth street."


バージニア、君の友達は間違っています。
Virginia, your little friends are wrong.

古い時代の懐疑主義に染まっているのです。
They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age.

彼らは目で見えるものしか信じない。
They do not believe except they see.

自分の頭で理解できないものは「ない」と思っている。
They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds.

バージニア、大人の心も子供の心も、すべてはちっぽけなものです。
All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little.

この広大な宇宙において、人間は、周囲の無限の世界と比べれば、その知性においてさえ、ただの昆虫、蟻に過ぎない。真実と知識のすべてを理解できる知性で測ればね。
In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

そうです、バージニア。サンタクロースはいます。
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

愛と寛大さと献身が存在するのと同じくらい確かに存在していて、溢れんばかりに存在し、君の人生に最高の美しさと喜びを与えてくれることを、君は知っている。
He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

ああ、サンタクロースがいなかったら、世界はどれほど陰鬱だろうか。
Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus.

バージニアがいなくなったのと同じくらい陰鬱だろう。
It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias.

幼稚な信仰は、詩もロマンスもなく、この人生を耐え忍ぶことはできない。
There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.

感覚と視覚以外に、何の楽しみもない。
We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight.

子供時代が世界を満たしていた永遠の光は消えてしまうだろう。
The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

サンタクロースを信じないなんて！
Not believe in Santa Claus!

妖精を信じないのと同じだ！
You might as well not believe in fairies!

クリスマスイブに煙突の番人を雇ってサンタクロースを捕まえさせようと、パパに頼んでもいいけれど、たとえ彼らがサンタクロースを見なかったとしても、それが何の証拠になるだろうか？
You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove?

誰もサンタクロースを見ていないが、だからといってサンタクロースがいないというわけではない。
Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus.

No Santa Claus! Thank God!

彼は生きている。しかも永遠に生きている。
he lives, and he lives forever.

バージニア、今から千年後、いや、一万年後の十倍後も、あの人は子供たちの心を喜ばせ続けるだろう。
A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
